    Quality of experience and access network traffic management of HTTP adaptive video streaming

    The thesis focuses on Quality of Experience (QoE) of HTTP adaptive video streaming (HAS) and traffic management in access networks to improve the QoE of HAS. First, the QoE impact of adaptation parameters and time on layer was investigated with subjective crowdsourcing studies. The results were used to compute a QoE-optimal adaptation strategy for given video and network conditions. This allows video service providers to develop and benchmark improved adaptation logics for HAS. Furthermore, the thesis investigated concepts to monitor video QoE on application and network layer, which can be used by network providers in the QoE-aware traffic management cycle. Moreover, an analytic and simulative performance evaluation of QoE-aware traffic management on a bottleneck link was conducted. Finally, the thesis investigated socially-aware traffic management for HAS via Wi-Fi offloading of mobile HAS flows. A model for the distribution of public Wi-Fi hotspots and a platform for socially-aware traffic management on private home routers was presented. A simulative performance evaluation investigated the impact of Wi-Fi offloading on the QoE and energy consumption of mobile HAS.Die Doktorarbeit beschäftigt sich mit Quality of Experience (QoE) – der subjektiv empfundenen Dienstgüte – von adaptivem HTTP Videostreaming (HAS) und mit Verkehrsmanagement, das in Zugangsnetzwerken eingesetzt werden kann, um die QoE des adaptiven Videostreamings zu verbessern. Zuerst wurde der Einfluss von Adaptionsparameters und der Zeit pro Qualitätsstufe auf die QoE von adaptivem Videostreaming mittels subjektiver Crowdsourcingstudien untersucht. Die Ergebnisse wurden benutzt, um die QoE-optimale Adaptionsstrategie für gegebene Videos und Netzwerkbedingungen zu berechnen. Dies ermöglicht Dienstanbietern von Videostreaming verbesserte Adaptionsstrategien für adaptives Videostreaming zu entwerfen und zu benchmarken. Weiterhin untersuchte die Arbeit Konzepte zum Überwachen von QoE von Videostreaming in der Applikation und im Netzwerk, die von Netzwerkbetreibern im Kreislauf des QoE-bewussten Verkehrsmanagements eingesetzt werden können. Außerdem wurde eine analytische und simulative Leistungsbewertung von QoE-bewusstem Verkehrsmanagement auf einer Engpassverbindung durchgeführt. Schließlich untersuchte diese Arbeit sozialbewusstes Verkehrsmanagement für adaptives Videostreaming mittels WLAN Offloading, also dem Auslagern von mobilen Videoflüssen über WLAN Netzwerke. Es wurde ein Modell für die Verteilung von öffentlichen WLAN Zugangspunkte und eine Plattform für sozialbewusstes Verkehrsmanagement auf privaten, häuslichen WLAN Routern vorgestellt. Abschließend untersuchte eine simulative Leistungsbewertung den Einfluss von WLAN Offloading auf die QoE und den Energieverbrauch von mobilem adaptivem Videostreaming

    Share and multiply: modeling communication and generated traffic in private WhatsApp groups

    Group-based communication is a highly popular communication paradigm, which is especially prominent in mobile instant messaging (MIM) applications, such as WhatsApp. Chat groups in MIM applications facilitate the sharing of various types of messages (e.g., text, voice, image, video) among a large number of participants. As each message has to be transmitted to every other member of the group, which multiplies the traffic, this has a massive impact on the underlying communication networks. However, most chat groups are private and network operators cannot obtain deep insights into MIM communication via network measurements due to end-to-end encryption. Thus, the generation of traffic is not well understood, given that it depends on sizes of communication groups, speed of communication, and exchanged message types. In this work, we provide a huge data set of 5,956 private WhatsApp chat histories, which contains over 76 million messages from more than 117,000 users. We describe and model the properties of chat groups and users, and the communication within these chat groups, which gives unprecedented insights into private MIM communication. In addition, we conduct exemplary measurements for the most popular message types, which empower the provided models to estimate the traffic over time in a chat group

    Improving the transfer of machine learning-based video QoE estimation across diverse networks

    With video streaming traffic generally being encrypted end-to-end, there is a lot of interest from network operators to find novel ways to evaluate streaming performance at the application layer. Machine learning (ML) has been extensively used to develop solutions that infer application-level Key Performance Indicators (KPI) and/or Quality of Experience (QoE) from the patterns in encrypted traffic. Having such insights provides the means for more user-centric traffic management and enables the mitigation of QoE degradations, thus potentially preventing customer churn. The ML–based QoE/KPI estimation solutions proposed in literature are typically trained on a limited set of network scenarios and it is often unclear how the obtained models perform if applied in a previously unseen setting (e.g., if the model is applied at the premises of a different network operator). In this paper, we address this gap by cross-evaluating the performance of QoE/KPI estimation models trained on 4 separate datasets generated from streaming 48000 video streaming sessions. The paper evaluates a set of methods for improving the performance of models when applied in a different network. Analyzed methods require no or considerably less application-level ground-truth data collected in the new setting, thus significantly reducing the extensiveness of required data collection

The system has been included in the pilot experiment for electronic elections in Portugal, at the beginning of the millennium, and has been updated and developed until this date. The dissertation will have the student analyse this system and characterize it relative to the state of the art. Namely, following objectives are underway: 1) Investigation of the state of the art for electronic voting systems in the scientific literature; 2) Detailed characterization of Certvote with the aid of Multicert?s development team; 3) Comparison of Certvote and relevant alternative solutions both in terms of specific scenarios it should work under and of security requirements or trust models it offers; 4) Proposition of changes to improve Certvote according to the obtained results

    Selecting Appropriate Process Models for IT Projects: Towards a Tool-Supported Decision Approach

    The appropriate selection of suitable process models plays an important role for IT project success. To aid in decision-making, IT project management literature offers a plethora of decision models for selecting suitable process models, however, hybrid process models are often neglected and adoption in practice is low or non-existent. To address this challenge, we draw on contingency theory to develop and implement a tool-supported decision model for the selection and evaluation of appropriate process models for IT projects, thereby leveraging artificial intelligence and machine learning in the context of a self-enforcing network. Our model provides an objective tool to assess process model suitability. Results from a conducted online survey with project management experts indicate high validity. Therefore, we contribute to the field of IT project management by expanding AI-based decision models for selecting and evaluating process models through extending the range of covered models and implementing inherent weighting of criteria

    Want more WANs? Comparison of traditional and GAN-based generation of wide area network topologies via graph and performance metrics

    Wide Area Network (WAN) research benefits from the availability of realistic network topologies, e. g., as input to simulations, emulators, or testbeds. With the rise of Machine Learning (ML) and particularly Deep Learning (DL) methods, this demand for topologies, which can be used as training data, is greater than ever. However, public datasets are limited, thus, it is promising to generate synthetic graphs with realistic properties based on real topologies for the augmentation of existing data sets. As the generation of synthetic graphs has been in the focus of researchers of various application fields since several decades, we have a variety of traditional model-dependent and model-independent graph generators at hand, as well as DL-based approaches, such as Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). In this work, we adapt and evaluate these existing generators for the WAN use case, i. e., for generating synthetic WANs with realistic geographical distances between nodes. We investigate two approaches to improve edge weight assignments: a hierarchical graph synthesis approach, which divides the synthesis into local clusters, as well as sophisticated attributed sampling. Finally, we compare the similarity of synthetic and real WAN topologies and discuss the suitability of the generators for data augmentation in the WAN use case. For this, we utilize theoretical graph metrics, as well as practical, communication network-centric performance metrics, obtained via OMNeT++ simulation

    Technology-related knowledge, skills, and attitudes of pre- and in-service teachers: The current situation and emerging trends

    This is the introductory article for the special issue “Technology-related knowledge, skills, and attitudes of pre- and in-service teachers”. It (1) specifies the concept of technology-related knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSA) of teachers, (2) presents how these KSA are currently assessed, and (3) outlines ways of fostering them among pre- and in-service teachers. The eight articles in the special issue are structured accordingly, and we demonstrate how they contribute to knowledge in these three areas. Moreover, we show how the afterword to the special issue widens the perspective on technology integration by taking into account systems and cultures of practice. Due to their quantitative empirical nature, the eight articles investigate technology at the current state of the art. However, the potential of artificial intelligence has not yet been fully exploited in education. We provide an outlook on potential developments and their implications on teachers’ technology-related KSA. To this end, we introduce the concept of augmentation strategies

    Do you agree? Contrasting Google's core web vitals and the impact of cookie consent banners with actual web QoE

    Providing sophisticated web Quality of Experience (QoE) has become paramount for web service providers and network operators alike. Due to advances in web technologies (HTML5, responsive design, etc.), traditional web QoE models focusing mainly on loading times have to be refined and improved. In this work, we relate Google’s Core Web Vitals, a set of metrics for improving user experience, to the loading time aspects of web QoE, and investigate whether the Core Web Vitals and web QoE agree on the perceived experience. To this end, we first perform objective measurements in the web using Google’s Lighthouse. To close the gap between metrics and experience, we complement these objective measurements with subjective assessment by performing multiple crowdsourcing QoE studies. For this purpose, we developed CWeQS, a customized framework to emulate the entire web page loading process, and ask users for their experience while controlling the Core Web Vitals, which is available to the public. To properly configure CWeQS for the planned QoE study and the crowdsourcing setup, we conduct pre-studies, in which we evaluate the importance of the loading strategy of a web page and the importance of the user task. The obtained insights allow us to conduct the desired QoE studies for each of the Core Web Vitals. Furthermore, we assess the impact of cookie consent banners, which have become ubiquitous due to regulatory demands, on the Core Web Vitals and investigate their influence on web QoE. Our results suggest that the Core Web Vitals are much less predictive for web QoE than expected and that page loading times remain the main metric and influence factor in this context. We further observe that unobtrusive and acentric cookie consent banners are preferred by end-users and that additional delays caused by interacting with consent banners in order to agree to or reject cookies should be accounted along with the actual page load time to reduce waiting times and thus to improve web QoE
